“Team” is one of those words that is used indiscriminately and that has all sorts of meaning and connotations. Almost every group of people who work loosely together, or sometimes who even work in a common physical area, is referred to as a team. Most “teams” in organisations are really working groups. And most team building has nothing to do with creating real teams. It barely scratches the surface of what operating as a high performance team is about. It is based on the fiction that teams are simply about working together.

Lifelong careers are rapidly becoming a thing of the past, at least in Western Europe and North America. Statistics indicate that people now have more than three careers over the length of their working life. However the definition of career change tends to be rather unclear. Is it changing functions within a company – e.g. from marketing to operations? Is it moving from one company to another? Is it moving to a completely different occupation, like architect to chef?  Each of these moves entails a progressively bigger change and each presents different challenges.

Employee motivation is not only financial

As nowadays is more and more difficult to recruit good employees, more importance is given to employee retention. Motivation seems to be a major factor involved in employee retention. This article explores employee motivation, not claiming that the subject will be completely explained. There are a lot of motivational theories from Herzberg to Maslow and many other. This article is not about that.

Coaching direct reports might not work
